Second Inspiration is
Lynley
Dodd, I love her stories and illustrations. I will have to study her style and
see if I can draw similar with my characters.
Marley and Bear
Bear is a male white
Maltese/Bichon Frise cross and Marley is a black Labrador/Collie cross. As Bear is a male dog, they are well known to
pee or mark their territory at every opportunity. Marley is a strong mided dog and her and Bear
a great friends. Myself and my friend
always take our dogs for A walk at the beach or come for a visit and chase and
bark at my hens.
My comic will have a mixture
of photographs, mainly landscape scenery and then my characters rthe the comic
will be drawn. I will take a lot of
photos of the dogs doing different activites and study these and use these as
case studies to get the proportions and balance of each character.
Story line
Page 1
Marley is in her kennel, sunning herself in the morning sun,
who should pop around the corner is her best friend Bear.
Bear opens Marley’s kennel door and the two of them have a
play around the yard chasing each other and barking at the hens. “Come
on Bear lets go, I want to chase the seagulls at the beach” said Marley. Bear asks “Can we stop off at the Park on the way?”
Page 2
They arrive at the park and begin sniffing around, Marley
starts running around the pond, looking for a great spot to go for a swim while
Bear has to mark his territory by peeing on everything. Marley and Bear get chased out the park by
some geese. “Phew” said Bear, “that was
close!” “Na” said Marley, “I can out
run them easily” “(yeah, but I have
wee legs” said Bear).
Page 3
As Marley and Bear wonder through town, Bear said “let’s go to the Butchers they always give us
a sausage or two”, “wow look at high those buildings are” said Marley as
she turns around Bear is peeing on a fire hydrant, “hurry up! Do you have to do that cock your leg on everything?” “YES!”
said Bear. They begin laughing and
carry on down the road.
Page 4
Bear pops his head through the cat door at the butchers, the
butcher yells out, “the mutts are here
for their sausages.” As the butcher
leans down to give the dogs their sausages, he pats each dog. He said
“where are you off to today?” Marley looks at Bear “idiot thinks we can talk”.
With that the two friends take off with the sausages trailing
behind. “I think I should get more sausages than you, I’m twice your size Bear”. The pair finish their lunch and wonder down
the road towards the beach.
Page 5
AS they cross the bridge Bear says to Marley, “I hate heights” Marley replies to Bear “lucky you a short then”. “Look
Bear there is a post at the end of the bridge with your name on it”, as
Marley turns to Bear, he had already passed her and was marking his
territory. Marley thought to herself “works every time.”
Page 6
“Seagulls Seagulls Seagulls!!” Marley runs off to chase the seagulls along
the water front. Bear yells out, “I’ll catch up”! He finds a fresh log to mark his sent on, “YES! First one here.”
Page 7
Marley and Bear spend the afternoon rolling on the sand “mmm dead fish, smells so good” and
chasing the birds “(Bark Bark, bark bark)” As Marley on her
third run along the beach, she hears Bear barking “(bark, bark)”at something close to the water. “What is it, said Bear?”
Page 8
“Shh Bear it’s a dead whale,
must have got stranded when the tide went out”, “are you sure its dead” said Bear?
“I can pee on it to make sure”,
“NO! Let’s go, it getting late. WE have to beat everyone home! Or ill get a padlock on my kennel and you
know what they do to male dogs who wonder??”
Page 9
AS Marley and Bear wonder down the railway tracks,
reminiscing on their awesome day, they hear a loud rumble and look around to
see a bright light. “It’s a train, hurry up bear or we won’t get
across the bridge in time”. Marley
grabs Bear by the collar and sprints across the bridge, just as they hear the
horn and the train zips passed them. As
they lay in the grass laughing about another close call.
Page 10
“So same time
tomorrow?” “Yup sounds a date, I want to
go to the Museum” said Marley, “I
have a bone to pick, with a certain dinosaur”, They both start laughing Hi
paw each other and head for home.
Page 11
“I’m home Bear”!
Bear woke with a startle from a deep sleep.
As he jumps into his mummy’s arms, with a lick and a bark. Telling her all about his adventure, but of
course she only hears “BARK BARK”.
Page 12
When Marley’s family arrive home, she’s sound asleep on the
front deck. “Hmm” said her mum, “I must
fix that kennel lock?” “Opps!” Thought
Marley. THE END
Where the dogs are talking or thinking “in italic”, will be in speech bubbles or thinking bubbles, see
sample ideas.
My goals this year for drawing, is to get more perspective
and balance.
My inspirational artists and authors are not comic books,
but they have great story lines, that children love to read and the
illustrations are fun and keep children amused.
My audience is 3 to 8 years, but also the parents reading the stories
will enjoy and can relate to the characters.
First Inspiration is Craig Smith, with Wonky Donkey
book. I like Craig’s story lines, I’m
not sure if I will use the style that Katz
Cowley draws in.
