Understand traditional Maori practices, allows you to have the freedom to be a contemporary Maori art practitioner. 

He use to use traditional tools, but now uses electric drills and modern hand tools.
Custom wood must be sealed first with paint.  If staining the final coat will be done with polyurethane.

Colour selection is to represent NZ beginnings.

Part 2 Te Ao Whanui 

They got their food from the land, never had power when growing up.  His mother was Maori and his father was pakeha.  Every carving represents Maori traditions and tells a story and genealogy of his family.

Artist Mervin Taylor was his inspiration in the early years, before he left school.  He moved to Wellington and studied at teachers college and stayed with Mervin Taylor's family home.  This was where he meet his wife at teachers college.

Cliff began his carving with a European influence and over time his carvings began to represent Maori styles.

Meeting houses around New Zealand were community projects that Cliff took on and restored them to their original beauty.
Cliff has been on several boards of committees as an advisory especially for Maori issues.
